In 2010 I was asked to perform the chassis reinforcement on the 88 Fiero I did the 4.9 swap in. I took my tools and welder up to his place and stayed with him over the new years holiday and a couple more weekends after it to finish it up.
This time I didn't want the reinforcement to reduce the ground clearance much more than 1/2", so we opted for a 2 x 3 x 1/8" wall "U" shaped section that would be fitted into the rocker panel section and tie into the base of the A-pillar and the rear upper frame rail. To improve the torsional rigidity, the fuel tank area had some angle added to it (welded to the floor pan), additional cross braces between the front and rear frame rails tied into this new angle and the opening was capped with a 1/8" steel plate.
